To start off with, my name is Kevin Cavanagh. My wife, Tina, and I started Bearscat Bakehouse. Originally it was, "The Donut Hole", but we changed the name to Bearscat Bakehouse in 2011.
I get asked all the time, where did you get that name? I was reading an old cowboy dictionary (I mean, who doesn’t read those?), and found that they used the term "bearscat" to refer to their donuts. I loved it, Tina did not.
I also researched and found that Louis L’Amour (a North Dakota native) wrote about bearscat being donuts in a few of his books. I knew that was the name I wanted to use, it took me a couple of years to convince Tina it was a good idea. She does win some disagreements, I wanted to name our second location "#2", and she said, "No".
I also used the word bakehouse instead of bakery, because that was what they were originally called, and once again, I just wanted to be a little different.
Some people wonder where we came up with some of our donut names. Well, here are a few:
Kramer: This donut has pretzels on it, and one customer suggested the name after an episode where Kramer is supposed to have a bit part in a movie and say how pretzels are making him thirsty.
Elvis: I was reading where Elvis liked to eat his peanut butter sandwiches with bananas and bacon on them and I thought that will make a great donut.
Samoa: My oldest daughter Madi and I had the amazing opportunity to go to Apia, Samoa on a humanitarian trip. We actually loved to so much we went back the next summer. We spend 3 weeks with our group building a home for a local family in need. It was amazing to see the beauty and amazing people in that country. When we got home we decided to make a donut with coconut on it.
We have had a lot of fun with our name and naming our donuts. We think the world should be fun, we should all have a little fun and I hope our story and donuts make you smile.
